About the Cultural Forum, Manipur

The Cultural Forum, Manipur, was founded on Monday, May 17, 1959. This esteemed institution was established through the efforts of a group of like-minded individuals who convened at the residence of the late Ningthoukhongjam Tombi Singh, then an MP of the Lok Sabha, in Uripok. Recognized by the Sahitya Akademi, New Delhi, India’s National Academy of Letters, it is the second oldest literary forum in Manipur, following the Manipuri Sahitya Parishad. The Forum's first president was the late N. Tombi Singh, former MP of the Lok Sabha, and the late RK Mani Singh served as its first General Secretary.

Objectives of the Forum:

  • To create a center where intellectuals interested in literature and various art forms can meet regularly to discuss the issues pertaining to Manipuri art and culture.
  • To publish a journal in Manipuri that objectively reflects the unique way of life of the Manipuris and provides clear, non-controversial insights into their various problems.
  • To identify and thoroughly discuss important topical issues with impartiality.
  • To initiate programs that promote virtues such as regularity, discipline, courtesy, and harmonious living.

The Cultural Forum has been dedicated to promoting and preserving Manipuri culture and literature, not only within Manipur but also in regions like Assam, Tripura, and Bangladesh, where the Manipuri language is spoken and written. The Forum has instituted awards funded by donations from individuals committed to its objectives. It has also published rare and significant books that authors were unable to publish independently. Regular activities of the Forum include literary programs, workshops, and publications. Additionally, the Forum strives to keep Manipuri writers informed about current national and world literature by conducting study circles, dialogues, and other collaborative projects with the Sahitya Akademi, New Delhi.
