RITU: The Legacy of Manipuri Literature

RITU, the first complete literary journal in Manipuri, stands as a testament to the rich literary heritage of the region. Serving as the official mouthpiece of the Cultural Forum, Manipur, RITU has been a cornerstone in promoting and preserving Manipuri literature and culture. Since its inception, this bi-monthly journal has been published continuously by the Forum, reflecting its commitment to the literary and cultural discourse of the Manipuri-speaking community.

The History of RITU

The journey of RITU began on May 17, 1959, with the visionary leadership of Elangbam Nilakanta Singh, who served as the journal's first editor until 1961. Under his stewardship, RITU established itself as a significant platform for literary expression and intellectual discussion in Manipuri. His efforts laid the foundation for what would become a revered institution in Manipuri literature.

In 1965, RITU made history once again by appointing its first female editor, Takhellambam Thoibi Devi. Her tenure, which lasted until 1967, marked a milestone in the journal's history, reflecting the progressive spirit of the time and the Forum's dedication to inclusivity. Takhellambam Thoibi Devi's leadership brought a fresh perspective to the journal, further enriching its content and broadening its reach within the literary community.

The journal has been instrumental in featuring works of prominent authors, poets, and scholars, fostering a vibrant literary culture in Manipur. Its pages have showcased a diverse range of topics, from traditional folklore to contemporary issues, serving as a valuable resource for readers and researchers alike.
