Celebrating Sorokhaibam Gambhini: Recipient of the Sahitya Akademi Award 2023
The poetry collection ‘Yachangba Nang Hallo,’ written by the talented Manipuri writer Sorokhaibam Gambhini, has been recognized among the selected works for the Sahitya Akademi Award 2023 by the Sahitya Akademi, New Delhi. She will be honored in the category of Manipuri language.
Hailing from Tripura, Gambhini is the daughter of the late Surachandra Sinha and Mala Sinha. She holds a Master's degree in Sanskrit and a Kuvid in Hindi. Currently, she serves as the warden of the PG Women's Hostel at Tripura University. She is married to Binode Kumar Sinha.
Fluent in Manipuri and Bangla, Gambhini has made significant strides in literature as a poet, critic, and translator. Notably, she is the second Manipuri writer from outside the state to receive this esteemed literary award. The first was Naorem Bidyasagar, who was honored in 2014 for his work ‘Khungganggi Amasung Refugee,’ published in 2011.
Gambhini's celebrated work, ‘Yachangba Nang Hallo,’ was published in 2018. Her earlier poetry book, ‘Hanglak-Kanu Wahang Adu,’ came out in 2001. Over her prolific career, she has authored five books, encompassing poetry collections and short stories in Manipuri.
Her literary contributions extend beyond her books. Gambhini’s poems have been translated into English, Gujarati, and other languages, appearing in national and international journals. Her active involvement with various literary groups in Tripura and the accolades from Manipuri Sahitya Parishad Tripura, Manipuri Sahitya Parishad Assam, and others, further reflect her influence and dedication to the literary arts.
As we celebrate Sorokhaibam Gambhini's remarkable achievement, we also acknowledge the enduring impact of her work on Manipuri literature and beyond. Her recognition by the Sahitya Akademi is a testament to her talent, hard work, and passion for the written word. Congratulations, Gambhini, on this well-deserved honor!
